Chapter header provide a perfect entry into an upcoming chapter. A full-page illustration is not neccessarily needed to set the mood for what's to come in the pages that follow.

Double-sided Illustrations
Double-sided illustrations are perfect for the endpaper and the seperation of or at the end of chapters. Depending on your vision and your story, they can be black-and-white or colored.

Character Design
A fully detailed illustration is not always needed, especially when you're primarily looking for a visualization of your character. A sketched illustration can suffice entirely to introduce your character to your audience.
